Special remarks on the occasion of the International Day of Forests

Excellencies,
Distinguished delegates,

I am pleased to join you in celebrating the International Day of Forests.

Today, as we reflect on the theme ¡°Forests and Foods¡±, we acknowledge the critical role of forests in our food systems and sustainable development.

At this moment of economic uncertainty, geopolitical tensions, and an escalating climate crisis, we must strengthen multilateralism and international cooperation. to build a more just, resilient, and equitable world.

For our development model to be truly sustainable, it must not compromise our planet¡¯s natural resources.

Forests are at the heart of this vision. They are more than ecosystems; they are our economic assets, climate regulators, and sources of sustenance for billions of people.

Protecting forests, reversing deforestation and restoring degraded lands is not only an environmental imperative but also a pathway to economic resilience, food security, biodiversity and climate justice, ensuring a more sustainable and equitable future.

In this regard, the importance and urgency of forest financing cannot be overstated. Forests are among the most effective nature-based solutions to climate change, absorbing carbon, regulating water cycles, and protecting biodiversity while supporting livelihoods.

Their full potential can only be realized with adequate investment that secure economic opportunities, build resilience, and ensure a thriving planet for future generations.

The upcoming Fourth International Conference on Financing for Development in Spain offers a critical opportunity to bridge financing gaps for sustainable development at scale and with urgency. We must seize this moment to mobilize the necessary resources to scale up forest conservation and restoration efforts.

Similarly, the UNFCCC COP30 in the Brazilian Amazon will provide an excellent platform to accelerate action and investment in forests, especially in the regions where they are most vital.

Distinguished delegates,

Today¡¯s discussion on the theme¡ª ¡°Forests and Foods¡±¡ªhighlights the direct link between forests and food security.

As we discuss these critical issues, I wish to acknowledge the important contributions of diverse stakeholders working on the frontlines of forest conservation and food security.

Indigenous Peoples have long been stewards of forests, with their deeply rooted knowledge of sustainable forest management.

Civil society organizations and the private sector are vital partners, driving innovation and supporting local communities.

Young leaders and students are bringing fresh perspectives and energy to the movement, playing a critical role in shaping the future.

And artists, through their creative expression, are raising awareness and inspiring meaningful action on a global scale, on the urgency of forest conservation.

Each of us has a role to play in elevating forests on the development agenda at all levels.

Let us use this International Day of Forests as a catalyst of change, to reaffirm our commitment to protecting and restoring forests.

Together, we can build a future where forests continue to nourish our societies and ecosystems for generations to come.

Thank you
